Cobra Lily_ Identity
& Narrative

The challenge

A luxury cocktail bar in the Xintiandi area in Shanghai approached us to help them create the Naming, the brand identity and the art direction for interior design.

the storytelling

Cobra Lily

The Naming is taken from an insect carnivore plant. Darlingtonia californica /dɑːrlɪŋˈtoʊniə kælɪˈfɔːrnɪkə/, also called the …
Cobra Lily.

The plant was discovered during the Wilkes Expedition in 1841 by the botanist William D. Brackenridge at Mount Shasta.

The idea was to create a mysterious female character, someone that seems to be taken from a spy novel by ¨John le Carré ¨, someone that could be moved between shadows in colonial Shanghai from the 30’s and have a bit of Madame Butterfly essence and drama.

The Naming

The idea came from Sara Abad, my partner, and Brand Strategist who brought to life a beautiful Naming and we built over it and developed a storytelling around a mysterious character.

The Visual Identity, the interior design details, and all the communication elements for the bar were designed to recreate the duality of the character, so sweet and dangerous.

The atmosphere is intended to keep the mystery halo from the business cards to the corridors of the cocktail bar.

The menus, the main Handle Door, the wallpaper, and the chairs, are all still conceptual and narrative connected.
